“THIS PRISON WHERE I LIVE”: HUMOUR UNDER BURMA’S DICTATORSHIP
Tuesday, August 02, 2011
Phnom Penh: On May 2011, Burma released a few dozen of its estimated 2,200 political prisoners. But Zarganar, the Southeast Asian nation’s most famous comedian and one of the most active government critics, remains behind bars. He is currently serving a 35 year sentence for leading a humanitarian movement that collected money and supplies for the survivors of Cyclone Nargis. In 2007, before his arrest, Zarganar was interviewed by British filmmaker Rex Bloomstein. Two years later Bloomstein teamed up with German comedian Michael Mittermeier for the doc film THE PRISON WHERE I LIVE (2010, Burmese/German with English subs) to investigate humour under dictatorship. The screening is on Wednesday At 7 PM at Meta House.
