“SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT”: AN UNIQUE KHMER-GERMAN LOVE STORY
Thursday, June 24, 2010
Phnom Penh: This German feature (2009, 107min) will be screened in its Khmer version with English subtitles at 6.30PM and 8.30PM on Sunday. You can reserve seats.
SAME SAME is based on a memoir by journalist Benjamin Pruefer, who fell in love with a Khmer bar girl. Both are little more than kids in appearance but their characters in real life faced tremendous problems when Ben returned to Hamburg and Sreykeo discovered she was HIV-positive. Director Detlev Buck invests considerable emotions and no little realism in an unblinking depiction of Third World wretchedness and the western sex tourism that gets off on flirting with potential disaster.
