150,000 illegal Cambodian workers in Thailand
Sunday, December 02, 2007
Siem Reap Province: Every day there are about 300 to 500 Khmer workers who are sent back by Thai
authority at Poy Pet border to Cambodia. And the same problem also happens in other gates’ border. Due to
this continual matter, Cambodia and Thailand opened a third Ministerial Meeting negotiated about the
employment workers between the two countries. In the agreement, there was some consent over the
right to return to Cambodia, the right to work in the morning and come back in the evening, and so on.
According to the statistic, about 180,000 Khmer workers are working in Thailand, among them, 150,000
are illegal. Mr. Seng Kakada, Labor employment department director, calls for every Cambodian
worker to be legally employed for the sake of his protection in order to avoid any labor exploitation from
his Thai employer.
