Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Phnom Penh: As a matter of fact, the volume to solid wastes in the city was gradually increased; particularly the Capital Hall had noticed that plastic bags and other dismantle materials were become convenient and favorite in every market as well as in Khmer social families recently. Those wrapping materials would turn to be wastes in the city and regularly need to sweep; collect; transport and discharge at landfill daily. As research, those materials were produced by fossil and poisonous chemical organ that would age up to 4 to 10 century to dismantle itself.
Recently, those wastes were seen most of the place in the city such as in canal, drainage, lake, rice fields and river which could harm to the beauty and environment of the city. Some of those plastic wastes were destroyed by fire in the open space and could discharge poisonous gas to human beings and animals.
The Capital authority had also discussed on the initiative to reduce plastic usage and in order to have all relevant bodies participate and effectively implement that project, in the afternoon of January 19, 2012, at the Capital Hall, there was a discussion meeting with representatives from supermarkets in Phnom Penh to set up a proper plan in reducing plastic utilization and that meeting was chaired by Mr. CHAN Sam An, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh. During that meeting, Mr. Deputy Governor had requested to all representatives of those markets to disseminate to their customers to help in decreasing plastic usage and find up suitable replaced materials such cloth bags, bamboo baskets which would be used more times and especially consider on any kinds of wrapping material that could easily melt such as banana leafs, lotus leaf, paper…etc. (City Hall)
