Almost 3,000 HIV/AIDS Patients Die in 2011

Phnom Penh: (AKP) The number of Cambodian people who have died of HIV/AIDS reached to 2,608 in 2011, while new infection cases were 1,517, said Dr. Chhea Chhorvann, Vice President of the National Institute of Public Health.
Among the 2,608 patients, 2,484 were over 15 years old and 124 were children, he said, adding that of the 1,517 new HIV infection cases, 1,326 are over 15 years old and 191 are children.
In 2011, there were more than 75,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and up to the third quarter of 2011, 41,289 of them have received the ARV treatment, he indicated.
Cambodia is considered as a successful country by the UN in combating HIV/AIDS because the country has brought the HIV/AIDS infection rate down to 0.8 percent in 2010 from 1.2 percent in 2003.
