Award-Winning American Documentary to Premier in Cambodia

New Year Baby, an award-winning documentary by Cambodian-American filmmaker Socheata Poeuv, will make its Cambodian debut at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 19 at the Chenla Theater in Phnom Penh.  The U.S. Embassy is hosting the screening as part of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of U.S.-Cambodian diplomatic relations.

New Year Baby follows Poeuv as she journeys to Cambodia to learn about her family’s past during the Khmer Rouge.  The film won Amnesty International’s Movies that Matter award and was aired nationwide in the United States on PBS’s “Independent Lens” program.

Poeuv was born in a refugee camp in Thailand but was raised in Dallas, Texas.  She graduated cum laude with a B.A. from Smith College in 2002.  She is the founder and CEO of Khmer Legacies, which seeks to create a video archive of the Khmer Rouge.

This event is one of many being held throughout the week to commemorate the 60th anniversary of U.S.-Cambodian diplomatic relations.  The events are designed to highlight the shared history between the United States and Cambodia and the many ways in which the two countries are working together.
