CMAC Twenty years of achievement 1992-2011

Phnom Penh, 28 November 2011_ The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) has been clearing landmines and explosive remnants of war since it was first formed in 1992. This has been a life-giving contribution to a country that is heavily contaminated by explosives. This year, 2011, CMAC reached its twenty years of operations, marking an important milestone and considerable achievements.
    CMAC has cleared and released an impressive 339 square kilometres of land and has destroyed over 2 million landmines and pieces of UXO. It has also responded to over the last five years, 52 thousand requests from the community for UXO interventions.
    The amount of land released per year is increasing as CMAC employs best practices and the latest technologies to ensure that the largest amount of contaminated land is released safely.
    As the largest in-country demining operation in the world, CMAC also shares its knowledge and experience with other countries that are contaminated with the explosive remnants of war.
    The core activities of CMAC have also expanded to include Mine/UXO Risk Education, Mine Information and Survey, and Training, in addition to battlefield clearance.
    This weekend, CMAC is also celebrating its long term relationship with donors and partners around the world.
    It is also celebrating its important relationship with the people of Cambodia under its slogan “Saving Lives and Supporting Development”.
    This 20 year achievement will be a major platform for Cambodia’s hosting of the 11th Meeting of the Antipersonnel Mine Ban Treaty.
