Phnom Penh: An intimate portrait of the teacher-student relationship in Khmer classical dance, THE TENTH DANCER, directed by Sally Ingleton (1992, 55mins) is a film about loss and retrieval, and disruption and continuity. Em Theay, renowned former palace singer and dancer and her dance student Pen Sok Chea are both survivors of the Khmer Rouge. This Australian documentary traces their journey as they try to rebuild their lives and their art in Cambodia following the genocide that left perhaps more than 80 percent of their artistic colleagues dead. This presentation is part of our dance film series curated by Khmer Arts Academy, based in Takhmao.
