Fruitful Results of Education in Phnom Penh 2011-2012

Phnom Penh: A wrap up congress for assessment works of Municipal Education, Youths and Sports in last school term 2010-2011 and new tasks formulation for 2011-2012 was organized on 28th December 2011, presided over by H.E Governor KEP Chuk Tema at a training school in Sangkat Tuk Laork 3, Khan Toul Kork, Phnom Penh.
According to a report by Mr. CHEA Cheat, Director of Department of Education, Youths and Sport, educational sector has been achieved following results:
+ Early Age Education: 5 more kindergartens were built out of the existing 23, of total 17,528 pupils;
+ Primary School: 49 schools were built out of the existing 164, of total 133,061 students;
+ Secondary School: there are totally 33 schools, of total 50,920 students, of whom 17,046 students passed primary school exams. Also, there are 33 high schools of total 46,035 students, of whom 465 passed high school exam.
+ Out-side school: prepared illiterate programs, consisting of 7,135 students, of whom 2,019 has become literate.
+ Children and Youth: children council was established in primary and high school and youth council in high school which consists of 161,736 members. It also consists of 18,933 Phnom Penh Scouts and 9,900 Cambodian Red Cross Youths.
+ Besides, exercise activities have been included in primary and secondary school, and annual nationwide sport champion competition has also been included in high schools.
Director of the Department cited that the achievements today are based on the implementation of strategic framework for education from 2009-2013 laid down by the Ministry of Education, Youths and Sports and that of Phnom Penh Development Strategy 2005-2015 which illustrates 9 years basic education and better education for primary schools and high schools with equity and quality by offering an equal opportunity to all children and youths schooling for the purpose of poverty alleviation.
Addressing to participants, H.E Governor warmly congratulated and appreciated teachers, all levels of education officers, relevant departments and partnership NGOs for their hard works over the past years to successfully build human resource capacity step by step and overcome all obstacles.
After that H.E Governor donated 100,000 Riels to each teacher and continued to visit the site for a five-storey school construction, 52m x 10m, equaling to 12 rooms including one hall as a study room in the campus. (City Hall)
