Human Rights Organization Blame Government
Wednesday, December 10, 2008
Phnom Penh: A group of ten human rights organizations has blamed the government for delaying the anti-corruption law. They have urged the government to pass the law soon. In their view, corruption contributes to an increase in poverty and is the single-greatest obstacle to development. The human rights organizations say that the anti-corruption law has been delayed for decades, even though prime minister Hun Sen promised to ratify it in his last mandate. The head of the committee for Strict Law Enforcement for Human Rights in Cambodia, Heang Rithy, said that there was no political will to establish this law. He accused powerful government officials of being involved in embezzling national properties. NGOs, international aid donors, and foreign embassies will jointly put pressure on the government to ratify the anti-corruption law.
