Most of Cambodian People not Aware of Election
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
The national election is coming, but most of Cambodian people, who are on vote especially in the country sides or in the remote areas, have not known about it as well as the political parties.
Com Boeng village, Sreung commune, Kampong Thom province’s Bras Satsombor district, is in the north east of Kampong Thom town about 60 kilometers. The villagers seem to be uneducated enough and media do not reach there very often, neither that why they are hard to get any information.
Gathering under a mango tree, a group of people were watching the teenagers dancing in the circle to celebrate the Khmer New Year. Surprisingly, when being asked about the election, they said that we did not known when the date of the election was. Mrs. Sen said with little smiling that she was not aware of the election; nonetheless, around a few days before the election day, the local authorities will tell them to vote.
Chom Leur, a 75-year-old chief monk of Chom Boeng pagoda, also did not about election.
Related to the political parties, which registered to compete in the national election, they have known only a few ones such as Funcinpec party, Somrainsey pary and Cambodian’s people party, some call Hun Sen party.
