Dear Reporters and Editors,
You are cordially invited to attend and cover this event to be held at the venue and date indicated above.
This forum is the latest in a series of events to build momentum toward achieving the Cambodia Millennium Development Goals (CMDGs). Its focus will be on CMDG3 – Promote gender equality and empower women.
Despite some progress in improving their status, Cambodian women continue to experience great socio-economic disadvantages in comparison to their male counterparts. This raises a question: what temporary special measures can the country take to address these disparities in order to achieve CMDG3 in the countdown to 2015 – the target year for reducing extreme poverty by half under the global MDGs.
H.E. Men Sam An, Deputy Prime Minister, will preside over the forum and deliver the keynote address outlining Cambodia’s achievements and remaining challenges.
Douglas Broderick, UN Resident Coordinator, will emphasize gender-related issues as a cross-cutting priority in the recently approved United Nations Development Assistance Framework 2011-2015 for Cambodia.
Professor Drude Dahlerup, Department of Political Science at Stockholm University, Sweden, will discuss temporary special measures as a means of increasing female political representation, and Members of Parliament from Viet Nam, Timor-Leste and Lao PDR will share their own experiences vis-à-vis progress towards achieving MDG 3. A leading expert in women’s political participation from South Korea will also discuss Korea’s own experience in increasing women’s political participation.
The dialogue is part of the “MDG 3 Week” on increasing women’s political participation. The “MDG 3 Week” will take place between 6-10 September with the support of UNDP in collaboration with the Cambodian Parliament, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, UNIFEM, the UN Millennium Campaign, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and Action Aid.
