Thursday, February 12, 2009 - Editor: Tiep Seiha

By Ngo Menghak

School is the most important place for educating people in societies. It can improve human resources, reduce poverty and help people from illiteracy, which are the main factors to make country developed.

But poverty, illiteracy, school lacking issue and lack of human resources remain exist in Cambodia. Obviously, Students at Borey Santepheap II, Chom Chao commune, Dankor district, are facing with school lacking issue.

If you go to visit the new relocation site in Damnak Trayoeng village where Dey Krahorm residents live, you will see a lot of finished building apartments recently and some other apartments are being built. But the most noticeable thing is that there are only two primary schools: Trapaing Sala primary school and Prei Speu primary school and there have not been secondary and high schools in this village yet.

The education system in Damnak Trayoeng village has not been suitable with the education standard and job market requirements at present time yet, because it has very few private English and computer training schools.

Dourng Kimseng former Dey Krahorm resident who had moved to live at new relocation site in Damnak Trayoeng village said that her niece had been able to go to school by feet when she had lived at Dey Krahorm community, but it had only two primary schools in here that were very difficult for high school students because they had to go to study at Hun Sen Chumpouvan and Pong Teuk high schools which were so far from their homes.

Choub Lun, bnana seller at Borey Santepheap II, said, “My daughter has to ride a bike  to study at Hun Sen Chumpouvan high school and it takes half of an hour to get to school.”

“Borey Santepheap II has not had secondary and high schools yet, so my son has to go to study at Pong Teuk high school and it takes 30 minutes to arrive school,”said Kim Yan, Borey Santepheap II village-in-chief, Dankor district and former Dey Krahorm representative

“I have proposed Phnom Penh municipality to build a secondary school at Trapaing Sala pagoda and now it is being built,”Kim Yan added.

Trapaing Sala primary director school Norm Sarin said that the school had three buildings that had totally 9 rooms with 415 students and 9 teachers and he added that now the Phnom Penh municipality was building a secondary school.

However, Norm Sarin added, “For the time being, the school is lacking of teachers.”

“My school is now lacking rooms and  students in grade 5 have to study exchange class with students in grade 6,”said Pich Sreynich a student of Prei Speu primary school.

Pich Sreinich also complained that the road to school was small and school’s toilet could not be and library had some damages.

“Living at Dey Krahorm is better than living at Damnak Trayoeng village because the schools are near my house and it is also a good place to run business,”said Cheng Sreivann, a seller at Dey Krahorm community.

Chan Vichet, a representative for 91 families at Dey Krahorm said that all children who lived at the Dey Krahorm had chance to study at good schools which were qualified with standard and currently job market requirements.

He added that the schools were near their houses and the sellers were easy to run businesses too, so the 91 families at the Dey Krahorm did not want move to live at the new relocation site in Damnak Trayoeng village.

Relating to the school lacking issue at Borey Santepheap II community, deputy municipal governor Mann Choeun said on the phone that Borey Santepheap II already had schools as 7 apartments that had kindergarten and primary school.

Now the municipality was cooperating with local developer 7 NG by paying 50 percent per each to build a secondary school which had two floors with 12 rooms cost $140000 and it located at Trapaing Sala pagoda and that secondary school might be named “ Trapaing Sala secondary school.”

“Managing 7NG Director Srey Chantou said that the 7NG had previously cooperated with the municipality to pay 50% per each by building the 7 apartments as kindergarten and primary school and now we were building one more secondary school that had two floors with 12 rooms, but it had not been finished yet.

“The problem that the students at Borey Santepheap II are facing now is that some students have to go to study at Pong Teuk high school and the others has to study at Hun Sen Chumpouvan which are far from their homes,” he added.

The apartments at Borey Santepheap II, Chom Chao commune, are the exchange between the 7NG with Dey Krahorm residents. Up to now, 1234 families have agreed to live at the new relocation site in Damnak Trayoeng village and only 91 families have not agreed to live at the new relocation site.
