Three Khmer Rouge Leaders Seek Pre-trial Release
Tuesday, February 01, 2011
Phnom Penh: The three Khmer Rouge leaders presented in the court on 31th January 2011 to ask the court for release ahead of trial expected later this year, local media report.
Noun Chea, Khieu Samphan and Ieng Thirith requested the court release them on the ground that they have been detained beyond a time limit established by the court and that they had not been brought to the trial within four months of indictments.
Tribunal prosecutors Andrew Carley and Chea Leang urged the judges to keep the defendants in provisional detention to ensure the safety of witnesses and general social security.
The trial chamber has one month to decide on their detention.
